Why Denim Day?
Denim Day is observed to raise awareness about sexual assault and to stand in solidarity with survivors. It started in response to a controversial ruling by the Italian Supreme Court in 1998, where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices believed the victim’s jeans were too tight, and therefore she must have helped remove them—implying consent.
In protest, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans, and this sparked an international movement. Now, Denim Day is observed every April, during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, when people wear denim to show support for survivors and to challenge victim-blaming attitudes.
When people wear denim on this day, it’s a visible statement: what someone wears is never an excuse for sexual violence.
Wednesday, April 30 is DENIM DAY 2025. Let’s all wear our jeans and gather at Mujeres Brew House, 5-7pm.
Mujeres Brew House is located at
1983 Julian Ave.
San Diego, 92113
This is an all ages, outdoor venue with street tacos and beverages available to purchase. Put April 30th on your calendar now!
In solidarity,
Cathie Hyatt
